This year I was wanting to teach my older kiddos how to type properly. Since the world is definitely going in the direction of all technology all the time, I feel it’s important to know how to type. Especially with all the texting that kids do now, I feel like a lot of them will have a hard time typing on an actual keyboard. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid that’s where things are headed. Anyway, long story short, I wanted to formally teach my kids how to type properly so that they can be ahead of the game, so to speak.
Keyboard Town Pals could not have come at a better time! Keyboard Town Pals is a program for your kids to do on the computer to learn typing skills.
From their website:
Learning to type properly with eyes on screen:
- Improves creative writing skills
- Builds self esteem and self confidence
- Enables students to produce quality work more easily
- Provides a way to express thoughts and feelings
- Benefits all types of learners
First, they meet Sunny
Sunny is the narrator/story teller. She introduces your child to Keyboard Town. Tells them the names of all the streets and who lives in each house. Each street represent a row of keys and and each house a key or set of keys. For example, Amy lives in the ‘house’ where the A key is on ‘Home’ street.
Here are the ‘cast’ of characters:
These cute characters make it easier for the child to learn where all the keys are on the keyboard. Most people learn better when a story is involved, so they definitely made it easier for my kids to learn the keys. I was very impressed with how quickly my kids learned and retained where the keys are located! One great thing about the program is that it can be completed in two 30 minute sessions OR it can be broken up into 6-7 minute sessions.

My personal favorite parts of the program:
- The delete and backspace bars are deactivated. This decreases stress for the child… mistakes are okay!!!
- The stories make it easier to remember the keys!
- No boring drills.
- Your child will be typing actual words in the first 30 minute lesson.
- It’s FUN, so kids actually want to learn how to type!
