I told you all when the school year started that I was still on the search for a math program that I liked. I may have found it.
I have had the chance to try Math Mammoth by Maria Miller.
Here’s an excerpt from her website:
“Math Mammoth offers affordable, yet quality math worktexts and workbooks for grades 1-8, available as both downloads and printed books. These books concentrate on conceptual understanding and are strong in mental math. The directions in the worktexts are written directly to the student, and are often self-teaching, thus requiring little preparation and involvement from the teacher.”
From Maria Miller: “My aim is to help parents and teachers teach math so our children and students can really understand what is going on. I’ve striven to explain the concepts so that both the teacher and the student can "get it" by reading the explanations in the books. In essence, the books often become self-teaching for student. The worktext form also requires very little preparation from the teacher.”
That all sounds great to me! Not that I am lazy and don’t want to prepare lessons, but I like the ease of it. I don’t want to have to come up with explanations for how to do math problems. I like that it’s already explained for my kids. If they don’t understand how it’s explained, then I can help out with a different explanation.
I have been using the Light Blue Series. It includes two student worktexts (A and B), and supportive materials, which include answer keys, tests, cumulative reviews, and an additional worksheet maker. The money chapter in grades 1, 2, and 3 is available for U.S., Canadian, British, European, and Australian money.
My son has been doing great with the curriculum and I plan on continuing to use it. I do believe I have found his math program! Jury’s still out while I use it a little longer, but at this point, I don’t know why I would change my mind.
