I am planting my very first garden this year. I have always just gone to the Farmer’s Market for my veggies in the summer, but this year, I’m getting them from my yard! For the last 10 years or so, we have always rented and also didn’t really know how long we would be at each house, so I never really wanted to plant a garden. Well, we just moved into a new house, and while it is also a rental, the landlord doesn’t mind me doing a garden AND there are already places set up!
Yes, they’re a little grown over and neglected, but that’s okay. I’m determined to have a garden this year!
I have read a little here and there and spoken to friends (and strangers) about gardening, so I do know a little… but that’s it. I’m pretty much winging it.
The kids are super excited. They have been begging me for a couple years to plant a garden. They loved picking out what they wanted me to plant. On their list was watermelon, cantaloupe, and snow peas. I’m going to do all three, along with squash, basil, cilantro, lettuce of some type, tomatoes, jalapeños, green beans, yellow, red and green peppers, broccoli and I think that’s it. Hubby thinks I’m going a little overboard for my first year, and he may be right… but I’ve got all this space, why not use it??? I figure if something doesn’t grow, it will just help me learn for next year.
So, any advice from gardeners out there?? I will take any advice you give me… even if it’s to tell me you agree with my hubby!!
Any foods that are super easy to grow that I shouldn’t forget to plant?? Any flowers that I should plant in or around my veggies/fruits to keep bugs out? I’ve heard marigolds are good. I also plan on planting some citronella, because the mosquitos around here are awful some summers.
Thanks in advance for any advice you all might have! Wish me luck!
