I haven’t done my Sunday Recap in forever! The last one I did was my Heaven is For Real post and it was almost a year ago! I have really been meaning to get back in to writing them again. Basically, what I did, was write up a post on Sunday evening or Monday about what I learned at church on Sunday. Or maybe something at church triggered a thought and so I would talk about that in the post.
Today, it’s a little of both. Our pastor, Blake, talked about listening to God today. I’d tell you what he said, but I lost my notes and at the moment can’t remember a darn thing. The gist of it was to listen to God. Listen to that voice within. God is always speaking to us, if we would just listen to Him!
His talk inspired me to start doing my Sunday Recaps again. I’ve been meaning to do it and there are always excuses not to. I enjoy doing them and hopefully, you all will enjoy reading them, too.
I have been tested twice in the last couple of days and, unfortunately, failed both times. You see, this voice within… it speaks to you, telling you the things to do in every situation. It is up to us whether or not to listen to it. And I’m not just talking about the big decisions in life. I think we all know to pray and listen for the big things. It’s the little things too, though.
And it’s with these little things that God spoke to me and I chose to ignore Him. I will tell you about one of these times so you get an idea of what I’m talking about.
We have a griddle. After we wash it we usually put it on the counter to dry. Well, I had this idea to put it on its’ end, leaning up against the wall so that it wouldn’t take up so much counter space. Bright idea, right? Well, not so much when it also happens to be right in front of a cabinet, too. So, now if someone opens the cabinet, where is the griddle going to go? Crashing onto the floor, you got it!
The wee voice in my head, said, “This is not a good idea. Someone is going to open this cabinet and the griddle is going to fall on the floor.” For whatever reason, I chose not to listen to it. I thought, “No. No one will do that. They will see the griddle and will either move it or just not open the cabinet.” Right. Not 30 minutes went by and my 10 year old opened the cabinet, the griddle went crashing to the floor and broke, and I was mad at myself.
All of that could have been avoided had I just listened!
So, I’m listening right now, by writing this post. I figured if I was tested twice regarding listening and then the Sunday sermon was about listening… I should probably write a Sunday Recap which I’ve felt the need to write for awhile now. It’s like, “Okay, okay! I hear you!”
Even without my notes from the sermon today, there was one thing that Blake said that I want to share with you. He said, “You can hit as many rocks along the way, but God has the guide to get you around them.” … or something like that. He had a whole river analogy that went along with it. The point is that in a river, you need to avoid the rocks. It’s the same way in life. You will come across points in your life where there is a rock up ahead and you will have the choice of which way to go.
If you listen carefully, God will tell you which way to go to avoid the rocks.
I encourage you to go watch the recording below. It is the sermon from today. The first few minutes is Pete telling us a little about what is going on with our church locally, but if you stick with it past that message it will take you to the message I just talked about. If you feel led, watch it for yourself and see what you take from it. I can almost guarantee you will take something different than I did, because we are all on our own path. And that’s okay.
If you would like to weigh in on this topic OR write a post about what you learned at your place of worship this week, please link up below so we all can be a part of the learning process!
