New Use for Small Hand Sanitizer Bottles

October 15, 2012 by Nicole @ Some Call It Natural 16 Comments

You know those little hand sanitizer bottles that come in a plastic thing that can hang from a girls’ belt buckle?  They are supposed to be all cute and trendy, I think.  Don’t get me wrong, they are cute, but we don’t allow hand sanitizer in our house.  So it is now something that I have to figure out what to do with… without feeling totally wasteful and throwing it away.

New Use for Small Hand Sanitizer Bottles

Samantha has gotten them as part of birthday presents or as part of party favor bags.  When she has gotten them we just dump out the hand sanitizer.  To me, it belongs in the trash. ( I apologize if you don’t understand why I feel this way.  It’s too much information for this post… it needs a post all on it’s own.)

So, now we have this empty bottle with a super cute holder.  Samantha really likes them and frankly, I do too… if they weren’t filled with hand sanitizer.

If you are in the same boat we are and have received these, but don’t quite know what to do with them, I have a solution for you.

Put oil in the bottle!  Any oil (that is good for you) will do.  We have used olive oil, which is actually really good for your skin, in case you didn’t know.  Other ideas for you are, vitamin E oil, natural lotion, and Moringa Source oil (which is what is in her current bottle).

Editing to add: My friend, Marcy, over at Ben and Me, shared a recipe for hand sanitizer using essential oils for all you essential oil lovers out there! I thought I would share it with you guys. :)

Now, your daughter (or you!) can use these cute holders without having to use the yucky for your health hand sanitizer!

This was shared on Sweet Sharing Monda, Clever Chicks, Natural Living Monday and Tiny Tip Tuesday.

    What a great idea!
Now I will swim against the stream just a bit and state that I do use a sanitizer, but it’s unscented and as natural as possible. At some point I’m going to make my own. (once my big bottle of the natural stuff is gone.)

We all have to make our own choices. What is in your natural one? I’ve never seen a natural one. I’m sure it would be easy to make. I’ll have to look into that!

*sigh* My daughters have been given similar bottles. They’re supposed to be fun/fancy because they’re scented. But that just means (IMO) that in addition to being unhealthy, they STINK. This is a great idea!

I love this easy upcycle idea! I would put some almond oil with some doTERRA On Guard oil. It helps boost the immune system and protect against the nasty germies without the antibiotic resistant strain issue. Love it! Thanks for sharing on Natural Living Monday! I am excited to see what you have to share this week.

Ahhh! I totally agree! I hate the sanitizer in the bottles but love the bottles themselves! We actually make our own sanitizer and use those bottles to keep our homemade version in it, but I love that you could also keep oils in there! Good to know that they don’t leak any oil either.

Thanks so much for sharing this at Tiny Tip Tuesday! I’m sharing this on FB :)

Excellent way to upcycle – less plastic in the trash the better. Thanks!

I love this idea! When a bottle is sturdy and reusable it does feel odd to toss them. If you make your own butt-balm diaper salve you could out it in there and clip to a diaper bag too! Fun idea.

Very creative way to reuse an item you would normally toss. I agree that hand sanitizer stuff is just chemical filled junk. And oil is so much healthier and better for the skin.

What a great idea! I bet I could just fill it with plain water or maybe some cloth wipe solution for an easy stash in the diaper bag!
