With so many people having such a bad cough this year, I want to share with you a recipe for a concoction my dad made up. He got the base recipe from a patient of his who is an herbalist.
The base of the recipe are the 3 tinctures (Oil of Oregano, Mullein, and Lobelia) and my dad added in the vinegar and honey, because vinegar and honey are so good for you. It also makes it a more tolerable ‘drink’.
Here is what you will need to make a quart:
- 12 oz. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
- 12 oz. Honey ~ Preferably Raw and unpasteurized (This is just a minimum. You may add more to taste
- 1 oz. bottle of Oil of Oregano
- 1 oz. bottle of Mullein tincture
- 1 oz. bottle of Lobelia (not valerian root as pictured)
- One quart bottle
Lobelia has been used for respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and cough for centuries. The Native Americans were known to use it to help with asthma. There have been other uses for it over the years, but for our purposes with this recipe, we are interested in it’s respiratory qualities.
Oil of Oregano is probably one of the more popular things to have in your supply of natural remedies. Most natural minded people have taken it at one time or another. It can be used for so many things. Too many to mention here. Among them, though, is relief of cough.
Mullein has many uses as well, one of which is treating respiratory illnesses.
So, it’s obvious why these three herbs are used for coughs/bronchial issues! That being said, I personally think it is great for any illness since the herbs have so many other great things going for them. That’s not to say it will ‘cure’ you, it just can’t hurt! :)
Now, as far as the ACV and honey go… they are just both wonderfully good for you! Please research them both.
Okay… back to the recipe. It is really very simple. You will pour everything in the quart jar or bottle, put the lid on it, and then shake it like crazy to mix it up.
Now, taste it. If it is too hot (due to the oil of oregano), add more honey until you can drink it successfully.
Normally when we make it, we follow the ingredients above and it is fine. This last time I made it, the oil of oregano must have been an extra potent batch! I had to add a lot more honey! Every time I drank some, I would just add more honey to the jar! So, do what you have to do as far as the quantity of honey.
Now you can use those 1 oz. bottles to hold your concoction. Fill all three bottles with it and then you can have one where ever you are… in your purse, your car, and at work. Or, you can give a dropper to 3 people in your family as their own personal stash.
The whole thing will cost you around $50 depending on where you get your supplies. Not too bad considering you just made a quart of it!
You will only ‘drink’ a dropper full or so every couple hours when you are not feeling well, so this quart should last you awhile!
One suggestion I have is if you know someone else that may want to split it with you, that would save you even more money. You could split the cost in half and still have plenty for yourself.
I hope this helps you get rid of your cough and back to yourself!
Please let me know if you make this and how it helped you!
