Stepping Into the Green Confessional

January 17, 2013 by Nicole @ Some Call It Natural 13 Comments

Welcome to the January 2013 Natural Living Blog Carnival: Green Confessions. This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Natural Living Blog Carnival hosted by Happy Mothering and The Pistachio Project through the Green Moms Network. This month our members have written posts about areas of their life where they aren’t as “green” as they may want to be.

Okay, so I’m not Catholic and I’ve never been in a confessional booth (if that’s even what it’s called). However, if I were Catholic, and I needed to confess my sins against green living… well, let’s just say I would have some things to say to the priest on the other side of the booth.

I like you guys a lot, but I’m not telling you all my secrets!!!

I am willing to divulge a few of my green ‘sins’, though.

First one… I buy the greens (spinach, mixed greens, kale, etc.) that are already pre-washed in those plastic containers, ready to eat.  The greens I buy are organic, but I am way too lazy to buy the stuff that’s not already washed and ready to go.  We definitely eat more greens this way. Of course, we recycle the containers! Now, during the summer, I do buy lettuce from the farmers market and I have to wash it off and cut it or tear it or however it’s being prepared. I hate it though. I only do it because I know it’s a little bit better for our earth.

Next up… The toys in our house are NOT green. We do have a few ‘green’ toys, but for the most part, our kids play room looks like it came straight out of Toys R Us. Sometimes I feel bad about this, but honestly, mostly I don’t feel bad. They’re only kids once and they love their toys! Some of our favorite games to play together as a family are Sorry!, Uno Attack, and Trouble. Those are not considered green, but I wouldn’t trade them for 15 green toys, because we have so much family fun with them.

Okay, here’s my last one (that I’m going to share with you)… I use regular old nasty deodorant.  In high school, I tried to find a natural deodorant, but alas, apparently I am too smelly for anything natural. The one I use doesn’t have aluminum in it, that’s where I draw the line. It has plenty of other unnatural stuff in it though. I have tried lots of different natural deodorants over the years and NONE of them work for me. It’s sad, but I don’t know what else to do.

Okay… there you have it. Hope you still love me!

deodorant….My oldest is 10 now and I bought him to have on hand for when he decides he wants to use it. For him, I bought the least toxic, all natural deodorant I could find. My husband and I still use regular stuff. I really should start making our own.

I am guilty of all of these. Most of the toys I buy are Eco-Friendly, but I have no control over what The kids get as gifts and it would be rude and ungrateful to dictate what people buy my kids.
If you find a deodorant recipe that works, let me know! I have made several and none worked.

I’m guilty of the pre-washed greens as well. I’m sure it’s probably just as easy but it’s just so convenient to buy everything washed and cut.

I’m telling ya…you should just make your own deodorant! I *never* could find anything natural that would work for me – and I even was so bothered by it when I lived in FL that I tried the Clinical protection stuff (massively overpriced, if you ask me – it totally didn’t work!!!). I ruined so much clothing because I was caking on deodorant all day! My homemade stuff is the only thing that’s ever worked. It’s a lifesaver!

Jaime! I NEED your recipe! :) I am all for not using my non-natural deodorant. Can you email it to me? Or have you blogged it?

I too have tried to go natural, but I sweat enough under my arms that I really need an antiperspirant and I’ve struck out finding anything sans aluminum. On days when some sweat won’t matter, I have been trying a mineral salt based “crystal” which seems to be working. (It claims to not have any aluminum products in it.) Happy Greening!

We buy organic lettuce out of a container too. Most of our toys aren’t green, but my daughter has a few. When it comes to laundry soap, we switched this year to Shaklee’s. I love it! I hope you find a green detergent that works great for you, because our skin is the biggest organ. I can understand that you don’t want stinky clothes. :)

I was talking about deodorant, not detergent, but I’m glad you told me about Shaklee’s anyway. :) I’m going to have to try it!

I don’t feel too bad because I do the same things; I just didn’t think of them. During the summer we do grow our own greens, and during the rest of the year, I try to save time buying the prewashed ones when I’m desperate for some green in my diet.

Having all green toys is quite hard, I actually don’t know anyone who has all green toys! We get a lot of hand me downs and they’re definitely not green. We figure as long as she’s not chewing on them it’s fine since she has fun with them!

I have a friend that has *almost* all green toys. In fact, she has actually made a lot of her kids toys. I am just not that crafty!! And, I agree… as long as they aren’t chewing on it, we’re good. (That’s what I tell myself, anyway)
