This is a fun craft to do with your little ones. Depending on the age of your child, there is some prep work for you to do.
You will need the following supplies.
- Tissue Paper in your choice of color (I used red and pink)
- Pipe Cleaners
You will need 6 squares of tissue paper for each flower. Begin, by cutting 4 pieces 5in. by 5in. and 2 pieces 4in. by 4in. for each flower you will make.
For the flowers for my daughter, we alternated red and pink on the same flower, so we needed 2 red 5 x 5 squares, 2 pink 5 x 5 squares, 1 pink 4 x4 square and 1 red 4 x 4 square.
Once you have your squares cut, stack them the way you want them with the smaller pieces on top. I needed 10 for my daughter’s friends. I made 10 stack so they were ready to go.
Now you are ready to begin making them. Fold each stack accordion style.
As you can see above, once folded, your tissue paper will be approximately 3/4 in. wide.
Now, get one of your pipe cleaners and place it like so under the tissue paper.
Fold down the part of the pipe cleaner that is sticking up on top. Then, fold the long part straight up and then wrap it around the paper, keeping the paper flat. So, it will be hanging down, just like it is in the picture above, but now it will be shorter and your tissue paper is secured.
Now, is the fun part for the younger ones. They get to now make it into a flower!
Okay, once those sweet little hands are finished gently pulling each pieces of tissue paper towards the center, you have more work to do.
I used YummyEarth Organic Lollipops. Those have a sort of square shaped wrapper that can get in the way of your flower. So, if you are using YummyEarth too, just fold all the corners in to the center and use a piece of tape to secure it. This makes it easier to work with and prettier for the final product!
Next you will put the sucker next the pipe cleaner in the middle of your flower.
Now, begin wrapping the pipe cleaner around the stick of the sucker.
You will likely still have pipe cleaner left over at that point, so just push it up and then continue wrapping it around. You may have to push it up a couple of times.
Continue to wrap it around until you get to the bottom of the stick. The end result will be a tightly wrapped pipe cleaner/flower stem.
Okay. Now, you will notice your flower king of has two sides. It’s not a nice round flower.
This is where the tape comes in. You will pull your sides together and tape them.
Using clear tape, it will barely be noticeable, plus it’s on the under side of the flower. So no worries there.
Once both sides are taped, reshape the flower as needed. It has likely changed a tad in all the work to get the sucker in the right place.
And then you’re finished! Who would be able to resist a Valentine flower from a sweet little girl or boy!!??
It’s really quite easy. The directions make it sound harder than it is, but I wanted to be thorough. The part that takes the longest is cutting your pieces of paper and putting them in stacks the way you want them. Once that’s done it’s pretty quick. And my daughter had a great time doing her part!
