As part of the TOS Crew, I get to review many wonderful homeschool items. This time, it is a site called Supercharged Science. There is a lot on this site, so don’t let it overwhelm you (like I did…)!! My kids and I have had the pleasure of reviewing the e-Science Learning Program with a premium membership (for 6 months)!
Science has always been a challenge for me to teach, unless it was human body anatomy or even about plants and animals. When it comes to the science of motion, friction, mechanics, energy and so on, though, it becomes for of a daunting task in my mind. A task… that is how I see those subjects. And that’s not a good thing if I want to encourage a love of the subject in my kids.
Aurora Lipper is the woman behind Supercharged Science and she definitely doesn’t see teaching Science as a task! She loves it. In fact, she is an actual rocket science and has extensive background in many aspects of science. She started the site after seeing how bored college students were in science classes. She wanted to develop a love of science in kids when they were young so that when they got to college it wouldn’t be torturous for them!
The e-science learning program is an online science program with 20 different units of study (matter, mechanics, energy, motion, sound, chemistry, biology, and more. Within each unit, there are a series of lessons. With each lesson/unit, there is a instruction through a video with Aurora, reading material, experiments (with detailed instruction), and even a shopping list so that you can get everything you need ahead of time (if you don’t already have the items in your home). It really is all inclusive!
The experiments can be as simple as rubbing a balloon on your head to produce static electricity and then using that energy to move something, to something as elaborate as building a roller coaster! (please excuse the mess… we had to move things around in order to make room for our loopty loops!)
We involved some friends for the roller coaster experiment. Everyone had a great time trying to figure out how they needed to position the roller coaster in order for the marble to get all the way to the end and through the loops!
I like that all my kids can do this program together (grades K though 6). There are going to be some aspects of the information that the youngest won’t quite get yet, but it is still fostering a love of science that will follow her through the years. That is definitely a great thing!
With this program, kids will get to hear the information, see the experiment performed for them, then actually do the experiment on their own! In addition to the videos, your kids will also have reading material and worksheets to solidify the information taught.
The way you use this program is entirely up to you. You can choose to only watch the videos and do the experiments or you can do it all by adding the reading materials and worksheets. It is such a flexible program. Your only challenge is carving out the time to do it… the rest is done for you.
