There are certain comfort foods that you should still be able to enjoy even if you are living a healthy life! One of those things, for me, is biscuits and gravy!
I get lots of compliments on my biscuits and gravy… if I do say so my self… so I thought I would share it with you all so you could make it at home from scratch!
Just a warning… this is NOT a healthy meal, BUT it is all natural ingredients. No fake ingredients. Just good, old fashioned butter, flour, milk and sausage.
Here is what you need:
- 1 lb. sausage (try your best to get sausage with no MSG!)
- 1 stick butter (yep… a whole stick)
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 gallon milk
- 1 t diced onion (the spice, not fresh onion)
- 3/4 t garlic powder
- 1/8 t white pepper
- 1/2 t black pepper
- 1 T salt
Brown your sausage on medium. Once browned (or almost browned), put your stick of butter in the pan and turn burner to med – low. After butter is browned, add your flour. Mix flour with the sausage and butter until it is a crumbly mixture.
It should look like this:
Let it sit like this 1 minute, then add your milk.
And, keep adding it…
Now, it will be quite ‘liquidy’ (I know it’s not a word, but I like it) and you will just let it sit and cook. Just come back and stir it every 5 minutes or so.
When you stir it, make sure to break up the clumps of flour. Basically, that’s why you are stirring it every 5 minutes. You have to make sure you are able to break up those clumps successfully.
This is also the time for you to add in all those yummy spices and mix them in.
And, that’s it, really… Once it has a smooth consistency and is the right temperature, you are ready to eat! (Unless… see next paragraph)
I like my gravy thinner, but I know some like thick gravy. So… if you are one of those that likes thinner gravy, and the gravy is too thick for your taste once it’s all the same consistency, all you have to do is add more milk (maybe about 1/2 cup at time). After you add more milk, you will just follow the same pattern as before… stirring every few minutes and breaking up the clumps.
Pour your gravy over some biscuits or toast and enjoy!

I have made this with plain ground turkey as well if you don’t have turkey breakfast sausage. I just added some white pepper and it was really yum! Let me know how you like it!
