Think there is no way that would happen in our free country?
I regret to inform you, this can and HAS happened.
A student at my local junior high was placed on detention for answering a question on a test incorrectly.
What kind of question and answer could warrant detention??
On the test, the students were asked to list, in order, what are the most reliable sources for information.
The choices were : 1. The government, 2. Eyewitnesses, 3. The internet, 4. Newspapers.
This seems like an innocent question. How could a student possibly get detention for answering it incorrectly??
His answer went something like this:
1. Eyewitness, 2. The internet, 3. Newspapers, 4. The government
So, what was the problem?
He listed our government last… as the least reliable source.
This was deemed a “smart alec” response by his teacher and the principal.
Consequently, he got detention.
Here’s the thing… He wasn’t trying to be a smart alec.
He was simply answering the question in the way he believed was correct.
He is being raised by a conservative family. (Strike one.)
His family is teaching him to think for himself. (Strike two.)
He is learning the government might not always be honest with it’s people. (Strike three.)
He forgot that in public school, which is funded by tax dollars, therefore is “government” school, he needs to answer questions that are pleasing to the government. (The final strike.)
Our family homeschools, so we don’t have to worry about such absurdities.
That being said, not everyone homeschools. Nor am I suggesting everyone should.
What is the silver lining?
In my mind, the silver lining is that we are all finding out about it.
So, if you don’t homeschool… if your kids are in government school… what can you do?
Know what your kids are being taught.
If they are taught something that disagrees with your family values or opinion, talk to your kids about it.
If it is an important enough topic, after you talk to your kids about it, take it to the school.
They may not change the curriculum immediately, but at least you said something.
If enough parents are willing to stand up and say something to the schools about what is being taught to their children, maybe we can make a change!!
