Okay… I know it’s a cheesy blog title, but it’s true! Let me tell you about it.
GPA LEARN recently gave my family 2 complimentary one year subscriptions to their online GPALOVEMATH program so I could review it for you all!! I’m happy they did, too, because we may not have heard about them otherwise… and now you get to hear about them too!
My two youngest kids have been using this program for the last couple of months and they are really liking it.
It is for kids in grades K through 5 and has approximately 150 lessons and more than 10,000 practice problems per grade.
Here is my son beginning the instruction portion of one of his lessons.
To help your kids learn their math facts in a fun way, GPA LEARN has a neat coach for your child. There is a different one for each grade level.
When you are logged in, there are different tabs at the top to help you navigate through the site. They are labeled Dashboard, Learn, Engage, and Motivate.
The Dashboard shows you an overview of what is going on with your child. If you have more than one child using the program, you can see both kids in this area. I liked that. It was very easy to go back and forth between the kids to check on them both at the same time.
In the Dashboard will be how many lessons your child has attempted and completed. It will also tell you how well they did on those lessons. It also shows whether or not your kids engaged with you via messages and shows what their next reward will be and when they will earn it. (Explained more in below.)
On the Learn tab, you basically get to see the screen that your child sees when he or she logs on to the program to do their lessons.
You get to see what lessons they have completed and whether or not they “mastered” the material for the lessons.
The Engage tab will take you to an area where you can send and receive messages to your kids. You can ask them questions and vice versa.
We haven’t really taken advantage of this area, but I could see how it could be helpful the longer we use the program. I definitely like having it as an option for me if I choose to use it.
The motivate section is where you get to pick rewards for your child to earn while using the program.
There are so many rewards already preloaded into the system!!
And then, there is also a category labeled “Family (Custom)”. This is a neat one because you can create your own reward that is unique to your family. This could be going to their favorite restaurant, a specific place they like to go… really the options are endless!
How does the program work?
When your child logs on and selects a lesson, the first thing he or she does is watch the instruction video. The coach for their grade level guides them through the material to be learned.
After that, your child has the opportunity to practice what was taught. And, again, the coach is right alongside him to make sure he understands what he is doing.
After sufficient practice, your child then takes a quiz on the information.
When your child finishes a lesson, you get an email letting you know what they did.
I love this. The email is sent immediately!!
The email tells me what the name of the lesson was so I know the subject matter. And then it tells me:
- Date and time started and completed
- How long it took to complete
- If they watched the instruction
- If they did the practice problems
- If they took the quiz, it shows the score of the quiz.
It also has a link for you to audit the lesson so you can talk with your child about it if you feel the need to do so.
You will also receive a weekly digest of the same information, but it gives you the information for the whole week all in one email.
What did we think?
My son (grade 5) likes it. He had a hard time articulating why he liked it, but he definitely likes it. There is no moaning and groaning when it’s time for math and that is always a win in my book!
My daughter (grade 1) likes it too. Although I put her at a grade level below where she is so I could make sure she is all caught up. Because I did that, she skips the instruction and practice and just goes straight to the quiz each day. That’s a nice feature too… I like that we can just go straight to the quiz and not watch instruction on something we may already know.
Skipping a lesson also comes in handy if your child catches on to the concepts quickly and doesn’t need to finish the instruction before moving on to the practice problems, or even the quiz!
