I tell my kids that math is one of those subjects that you will use just about daily for the rest of your life. Whether it is while cooking or when calculating how long it will take to drive somewhere. So they can groan all they want, but math is necessary!
As a member of the TOS crew, I am spoiled to be able to try many different curriculum so I can share it with you.
CTC Math is the next company on that wonderful list!
They gave some of us crew members a complimentary subscription to their 12 Month Family Plan with the US Homeschool curriculum!!
It is an online program which you can use with up to 10 kids! You will have access to all grade levels with this plan… Kindergarten all the way up to Trigonometry!!
The first thing you do when you get the program is add your students in the parent area. This is an extremely easy process. You are just adding their name, a login user name and password. Done.
Then your child can use that information to log in to the student area.
Once logged in, the first page your child will see lists all the grades possible.
When he chooses a grade, using 5th grade as an example, the program will give all the options for the broad subjects in that grade.
Then, if he clicks on one of those broad subjects, it will generate a more detailed list of topics within that subject.
And then, again, if you click on the first topic, it will give an even more detailed breakdown of topics.
Notice at the top right of the page it has diagnostic tests to assess where your child’s skill levels are before they begin the program.
Then you can just click on each numbered topic and it will give lessons on those topics.
First, there will be a short video lesson explaining the material. Then, your child will have opportunity to do problems on that subject.
The program assesses your child’s comprehension of the material based on the answer he/she gives when doing those problems.
If you look in that picture above, you will see bars and stars. Those get filled in as the child advances through the material.
The video lessons are very easy to understand. And, they are not live, so if your child needs to hear something again, he can just go back on the video and watch it again for further understanding!
The lessons are only 4-9 minutes long, which I think is great. The kids can watch the lesson and then dig right in to practicing the problems.
They can go at their own pace with this program. This means that if they understand a concept quickly, they can do the problems and move on.
There were a couple of areas where I had my youngest skip the video lesson and go straight to the problems because I thought she already knew the information. The problems were a great way to confirm that and then we could move on to the next area where there was new information!
We have enjoyed this program and will continue using it for this next school year!
