I see people all over the place talking about their one word for 2016. Maybe they just typed it out in a Facebook status or Twitter update or maybe it’s a blog post like this one. Either way, I’m seeing them quite a bit since the start of the year.
I’ve never chosen a word, but I decided this year was the year to do it.
Honestly, it wasn’t hard choosing my word.
It was the first word that popped in my head when I decided to do this.
It’s the perfect word for me right now in my life.
This is something I am so desperately lacking in lately. In virtually all areas of my life, unfortunately.
For example, since I started writing this, I’ve looked at my phone three times already.
I’m so easily distracted lately. I’m not sure why.
I could make a few guesses… the main reason, though, is that I have too many irons in the fire, so to speak. Therefore, my mind is in a million places and it’s hard to concentrate on a single thing.
Since I can’t (or think I can’t) concentrate on anything important, I turn to my phone.
I’m sure someone on Facebook has something important to say.
Oh, someone’s gone their turn on Dice with Buddies!
While I’m at it, I may as well go use up my lives in Soda Crush… and try to beat my high score in 100! Puzzles!
And… now I’ve just wasted an hour. Ridiculous.
Plus, I have laundry to do, my house is a mess and I have a million blogs to write.
I have no lack of things to do.
What I have, is a lack of discipline!
So my word for 2016 is discipline. I vow to have more discipline.
Discipline to get up earlier.
Discipline to go to bed earlier.
Discipline to get up when the alarm goes off.
Discipline to write daily.
Discipline to read daily.
Discipline to clean the house and do laundry.
Discipline to exercise.
And the list goes on…
Here’s my big problem: I get overwhelmed by all of it.
To remedy that, I plan to attack one thing at a time and slowly, over the course of the year, become the disciplined person I desire to be!
I will start with getting up when the alarm goes off.
That may sound like an easy one for some of you, but I am an habitual snooze hitter. I can hit that button 10 times in a morning and think nothing of it.
Starting tomorrow morning, I will get up as soon as the alarm goes off.
My thinking is that this will start my day off feeling good, because I’ve already accomplished something. I’ve already challenged myself and won.
Again, I know it may sound silly to some, but I’m sure my fellow snooze button hitters understand how hard this will be.
I will do it, though!!
Once I have done this successfully for a few weeks, I think that going to bed earlier will naturally occur. After that, I will tackle one of the other things on my list of things in which I would like to be more disciplined. And then another and another and so on.
I’m excited about how this process over the next year will impact my entire outlook!
