So many people rave about Demme Learning’s Math-U-See program, but we have never used it. So, when I heard the TOS Crew would have the opportunity to review it, I was very excited!
More specifically, they have a new aspect of their program that is online. They call it their Digital Packs.
First, I’ll tell you a bit about Math-U-See, in case you don’t know. They have been publishing their math curriculum for more than 20 years. Their curriculum is based on levels instead of grades. This allows your child to progress at their own pace, as opposed to trying to stay within a certain parameter. I’m not much on “Standards” and determining my child “should” be at a certain place at a certain time, so I like that aspect of the program.
Also, they use a multisensory approach to their teaching. What this means, is they use manipulatives to help in the teaching process.
Here are a couple of pictures of my daughter building a 3 digit number with her blocks.
Yes, she is still in her pajamas… and lying down while doing math. The joys of homeschooling!
The number on the board in the second picture is a different one than what she is working on in the first picture… just thought I would mention that so I didn’t confuse you!
I had my daughter do a placement test to determine at which level she needed to start. She knew more about certain topics and less for other topics and it ended up that she needed to start with the Alpha level.
So, what is the difference between the Math-U-See packs that everyone has known and used for years and the Digital Packs? Great question!
The Alpha Digital Pack that we reviewed includes:
- 12-month access to Alpha streaming instruction videos
- Instruction Manual PDF
- Lesson solutions
- Skip Count Songs MP3s and Songbook PDFs
- Digital Manipulatives, using Chrome or Safari browsers
So, you would still need to purchase the student lesson workbook and tests to have their complete program.
Why would you use the digital packs instead of the original program? Well, there are multiple reasons:
1. You need to have multiple kids watching their lesson, but only have access to one DVD drive.
2. You need your kids to be able to access their lessons when you are not at home.
3. The digital manipulatives are cheaper than buying the real manipulative blocks.
Since I have never used Math-U-See, they sent me the full physical Alpha set. So, I received the physical teacher’s textbook, Student workbook, DVD, manipulative block set, and test book. And, then I also received one year of access to the Alpha Digital Pack.
Now, the lessons on the digital pack are the same as the lessons on the DVD, so I actually haven’t opened the DVD at all! That has made it very convenient for me to be able to have her do lessons when we aren’t at home!
I did find that using real, hands-on manipulatives are easier for my daughter, but it is nice to have the online ones available when we are out. That saves us from having to lug around the big box of blocks!
My daughter has really loved using this math program! And, the blocks really bring it all home for her. They seem to help it make sense.
With all the books that a homeschool family has to have, it is awesome to be able to have something like Math-U-See’s Digital Packs that lesson the amount of books in the house!
Math-U-See is a program that is usually done with a DVD, so it only makes sense to get rid of the DVD and just use it online. To me, it just seems easier and more convenient. There are also extra worksheets with the digital pack so if you want your child to have extra practice, they can!
I have really enjoyed reviewing this and so has my daughter. We just found our new math program! Thank you Math-U-See!!
