CTCMath for Your Homeschool

August 1, 2016 by Nicole @ Some Call It Natural Leave a Comment

CTCMath is an online math curriculum that my kids and I have been able to review for the last couple of months.

We were given a one-year subscription to CTCMath Homeschool Membership program to facilitate our review.

CTCMath is for those students in kindergarten all the way up to Trigonometry! It is a full curriculum for grades K through 8, anything beyond grade 8, it is intended to be used as a supplement.

The homeschool membership that we had access to is for up to 10 students. This is great for big families! My youngest two kids are who used the program. My oldest is going in to 9th grade this year, so she couldn’t use this as a full curriculum. That being said, she might be able to use it this year as a supplement for her 9th grade Algebra 1 class.

Since this is an Australian company, they are not aligned with Common Core. This is a plus for me. Further, the voice behind the lessons has an Australian accent, which is kind of fun to listen to while learning!

When your kids first log in, it will give them a list of grades they can choose to do work from (K through Trigonometry).

Then you pick a broad subject for your child to work on in that grade. Then a more detailed list of topics will appear within that subject. And, finally, an even more detailed list of topics.

When your child clicks on one of those topics, they are shown a video lesson on that topic.

After the video, they are given practice problems to complete to see how well they understand the information presented.

The lesson videos are only around 4 to 9 minutes long. Which is great, because it isn’t so long that the student loses interest.

Also, if there is a topic that you or your child feels he already knows, he can skip the video lesson and go straight to the practice problems. If he gets them all correct, then you know he has mastered that topic and can just move on to the next one.

When the practice problems are done, they are shown a screen with all of the problems and whether or not they are correct. If it is incorrect, it will explain the correct answer.

The child is able to stop the lesson at any time and rewind it to hear something again. This comes in handy for those times when younger siblings come in the room and start talking!

And, if your child responds well to certificates, then this program has that too! You can print off certificates when certain achievements are made.

There are also worksheets you can print out so your child does the old fashioned pen on paper work.

Lastly, you can receive email updates on what your child has accomplished within the program so you can stay up to date.

Here is a video from CTCMath explaining how the program is used and a sample lesson.

I almost forgot to mention… there are diagnostic tests your child can take to see what topics he needs to work on more.

I like this program. That being said, if your child excels in certain areas or is behind I certain areas, then it can be a bit frustrating to take so many diagnostic tests to find just the right area they need to be within the program.
