So many people don’t realize how easy it is to make homemade whipped cream.
Ingredients in Cool Whip and Whipped Cream
The ingredients in the stuff most people have in their fridge (Cool Whip) is pretty gross.
Just in case you’ve never seen the ingredients list… Here it is: Water, Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (Coconut and Palm Kernel Oils), Less Than Two Percent of Sodium Caseinate (from Milk), Natural and Artificial Flavor, Modified Food Starch, Xanthan and Guar Gums, Polysorbate 60, Sorbitan Monostearate, Sodium Polyphosphates, Beta Carotene (Color).
Now, for comparison… Here are the ingredients in my whipped cream recipe (and soon to be your recipe!)
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1/8 –1/4 cup sugar (See note below)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- dash of salt
I don’t know about you, but the second list of ingredients looks much more appetizing!
Real ingredients… I have all of that in my house except for the heavy whipping cream. So, when I want to make whipped cream, I just have to buy the heavy whipping cream and I’m ready to go!
How to make your whipped cream
This is really so easy, you will wonder why you’ve never done it before.
Put all ingredients above (heavy whipping cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt) into a bowl and whip it for about 2 minutes.
*Note about the sugar: I use 1/8 cup of sugar per pint when I am making it at home for my kids (sometimes even less). If you are making it for fellow natural kids and mommas, then 1/8 cup is fine. If you are making it for others, you may want to go with 1/4 cup so it is a bit more sweet. Definitely play around with the amount of sugar you use and find the right amount for your taste buds!!
Okay, you will know it is done when it is the right consistency for whipped cream. Once it is nice and fluffy, it is ready!!
I always use a hand mixer to make my whipped cream. You can hand whip it if you have the strength and the patience, but I have never tried.
And, that’s it! You are now ready to put it on your favorite dessert or just some plain fruit!
We love to eat ours with strawberries!
A couple of tips
Use a stainless steel bowl and put it in the freezer for about 15 minutes before you make the whipped cream. You can also put your beaters in there for good measure.
Be sure not to whip it too long or you will end up making butter.
Put the setting of your hand mixer on high.
Do you make your own whipped cream? Do you have any tips I forgot to mention?
