Have you ever seen the “If You Were Me and Lived In…” brought to you by Carole P. Roman and Awaywegomedia.com? I have had the pleasure of reviewing them in the past and now our family has gotten to review more of them!
They are wonderful children’s history and cultural books told from a child’s perspective!

There are many “If you were me” books by Carole P. Roman, but the kids and I received the following books:
These books are so cute. I love the way they blend history into a story that a child will enjoy.
Each story is basically a child from that time period telling all about their life.
I really only have one complaint I would have with these books is that at first it is hard to tell if the person telling the story is a boy or a girl. At some point, it becomes obvious based on the story due to the fact that most gender roles are fairly see through.
For example, in Viking Europe, we learn the boys are learning outdoor survival skills while the girls are learning to keep the house by learning how to sew, cook, and preserve food.
While in Colonial America, the child telling the story tells us about his religion and how they moved to a new land where they could worship the way they wanted without persecution. And, you learn all about how they make a home of the new land.
When we are in Renaissance Italy, we learn a lot about architecture and art and it influenced current architecture and art! We have recently studied Italy, so it was neat to read this book to learn more about it from a different perspective.
My daughter was not so excited to hear about how the boys received a great education, while the girls were only taught about how to be an efficient housewife! She would not have done well back then!
In Elizabethan England, we learn that cats and dogs lived in the densely pack straw roof. When it rained, they would fall off the slippery roof. That could be where the saying “it’s raining cats and dogs” was originally started. I love learning where different sayings and expressions from from that we use all the time!
In the back of each book there is a glossary of terms as well as a listing of important people from that time period.
I would definitely recommend these books as a part of your children’s history. I allows them to learn all about that time period in a more interesting way than the usual dry history we are used to seeing.
