UnLock Math in Your Child’s Brain! (UnLock Algebra 2)

June 22, 2017 by Nicole @ Some Call It Natural Leave a Comment

UnLock Algebra2 is the math we are choosing to use for my daughters math program this coming year. UnLock Math truly has a great program and we are honored to be able to review it and bring the information to you! (Also, if you click on this link, you will get $50 off an annual purchase of one of their programs, and I get a gift as well.)

UnLock Math Algebra2

We have been using UnLock Math for 2 years now. My daughter started using it with Pre-Algebra, then Algebra 1, and now Algebra 2.

I know a lot of people do Algebra 1, then Geometry, then Algebra 2, but someone recommended she take Algebra 2 at the same time as Chemistry, so we decided to do that. She will be a sophomore this coming school year and she will take Chemestry along with Unlock Algebra 2. Hopefully it will make the chemistry a bit easier. Fingers crossed!

UnLock Math

There are 15 units with 5 to 13 sections in each one, covering all of the concepts needed to know in Algebra 2. The scope and sequence is on their website if you are interested in seeing the exact topics to be covered.

The UnLock Math program is really easy to use. Your student logs in, watches a video, does some practice problems, and voila! Done. Okay… not really… but almost.

First, your child logs into their personal Dashboard. Once there, she clicks on the unit and lesson that she is currently working on. It will look like this:

UnLock Math Lesson

Warm up

There are first some warm up questions to get into “math mode”. They are reviewing concepts from the previous lesson.

Video

Yes, then the student watches the lesson video covering the material for that lesson. It is not long. The teacher gives the information for the lesson so the student can properly do all the practice problems, etc.

Practice Problems

These are just as they sound. They are practice problems covering what was just taught in the video. You can do as many as you want until you feel you got it.

Stay Sharp

The stay sharp questions are a set of questions from previous lessons. It is aimed at keeping all of the information close so you don’t forget!

Challenge Yourself

This is one or two questions that are a bit harder and is extra credit. It is on the current lesson, but it is harder than the practice questions. It is meant to challenge the student (as the name implies).

Reference Notes

You also have the option to print off notes for the lesson or look at them on the screen. We just look at them on the screen if we need to, but it is nice to have.

Throughout the program, there are also quizzes and tests. They are all graded by the program, just as the lesson questions are.

Another plus! No grading for me!! UnLock Math does all of it!

How is UnLock Math different than other online programs?

The biggest difference that I love is that my daughter’s math tutor is a real person! I know her name (Alesia). I know her husband’s name (Matthew). I know they have adorable kids (not that that matters for math, but it’s true).

If my daughter can’t “get” a concept after exhausting all of the helps in the program, then she can contact her teacher via chat or email. She has even spoken with her on the phone, because sometimes it’s just easier to explain it that way than in a written form.

Now, callling or texting is definitely used as a last resort. Alesia would be very busy fielding little questions all day long if students called for every tiny misunderstanding. But the program has lots of help built in. There are explanations for the problems that my daughter gets wrong. There are extra problems she can do for further practice and understanding. That being said, it is still nice to know she can fall back on talking to an actual human. And, since we’ve already paid for the program, we don’t want to have to pay again for a separate tutor! I love that it is just included. (Again, please don’t abuse how nice they are… be sure to try to figure it out on your own first.)

There is also unlimited practice and review. This is huge. Other programs just have a certain amount of review problems, but UnLock Math gives you an unlimited amount of time to “get” the concept!

What else?

UnLock Math has been a great find for our family. I reviewed it once with a program that was given to us for the purposes of review, but the next year, I purchased it. That’s how much I love it. It’s not like I just loved it because it was given to me. I actually love it enough to pay for it. All you fellow homeschool bloggers out there know what I’m talking about!

I really do hope you look into this program and see if it can bless your family. It has blessed ours.
