Get ready for your kids to take a trip around the world with Let’s Go Geography! Your kids will study a different country every week through different activities. It is geared toward children in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, but can easily be tailored to younger or older students.
Using Let’s Go Geography
The Let’s Go Geography curriculum is accessed through an online subscription. Each week, you are sent an email with a link that takes you directly to the next lesson you should be doing. That being said, you can also just log in and go to the lesson you are on instead of waiting for the email.
It is suggested to be done in one hour per week. Of course, that can be broken down however you would like. For us, it works to break it up into 2 days.
The author of the program, Carol Henderson, has been teaching the subject to elementary aged students in a homeschool co-op for years. Let’s Go Geography is the result of those classes! She put it all together for others to use. With that being said, if you are a teacher in a homeschool co-op, this might be the perfect addition to your program!
It is a 3-year curriculum. So, if you taught it at a co-op, you could rotate the years every year, so that the kids aren’t being taught the same thing every year. By the time you get back to the Year 1 curriculum, you could be teaching a whole new set of children, eager to learn geography!
There are 36 weeks in the layout of the curriculum, including suggested times for breaks.
There are many different activities in each lesson. The company is in no way implying you do all of the activities. You are to pick the activities that are best suited for the children you are teaching. The goal should be to become familiar with the country you are studying and have fun while doing it!
The activities include map studies, coloring pages, photo albums, notebooking pages, a craft, music, and learning about the country’s flag. There are also opportunities to learn about the facts for each country, where to visit if you go, what to eat, and also learning about the people who live there.
The first two lessons of Year 1 are about the United States. Lesson one is all about the Northeast United States. And then lesson two concentrates completely on Hawaii!
One of the first mapping activities was to color the states in the Northeastern part of the United States.
Apparently, Pennsylvania deserved stars instead of a solid color.
Another part of this lesson included a link to listen to the Star Spangled Banner. It was a link to a video on YouTube. The next video that came up after it was of Whitney Houston singing the Star Spangled Banner in 1991. So, I made the kids listen to it. She was so talented. If you haven’t heard it, definitely go take a listen/watch. She did such an amazing job.
What we think of Let’s Go Geography
I like this program quite a bit. I like that each country/area is broken down into bite-size pieces for the younger children to learn. I also like that there is no pressure from the curriculum to do it all!!
We will continue doing this throughout the year this year and will likely continue on with Year two next year. I may even see about teaching it at our homeschool tutorial next year. I think our families will really like it!
